Community Music returns this Friday with three solid bands to start your weekend off right. Kicking off at 8 p.m. at 7 Bagot Street (fondly referred to as the Onean House), for your listening pleasure, we present Harlan Pepper, Tear Away Tusa and Rose Brokenshire.

Harlan Pepper has been described as alt-country, hard rock, blues and folk all rolled into one. Hailing from Hamilton, the four young men have shared the stage with the Sadles, Born Ruffians, Elliot Brood, Lee Harvey Osmond, Huron, the Arlells and Feist. After they play our intimate house show they hit the road with shows lined up in Hamilton, London, Guelph and Peterborough.

Tear Away Tusa is no stranger to the Guelph music scene. A frequent performer at the Red Brick Cafe, the five-piece group has had a busy past year, playing shows in Toronto, Niagara Falls, Waterloo and all around Guelph. Last June, the band released a slick music video that gives you a little taste of their sound. Check it out:

Rose Brokenshire is a last minute add to the bill, but we’re so glad she can play! Check out her Bandcamp page to sample tracks from her three different albums.

“Rose Brokenshire is an ethereal lofi singer songwriter project all the way from Toronto. The songs are simple, unashamedly executed with all too natural starts and stops like the imperfections of breathing. The songs rest very self assured on the loveliness of this woman’s gentle voice.”

Although the arrival of spring has yet to dial back the icy bite of winter, don’t worry - a double dose of Community Music will warm your toes!

We have an amazing musical lineup prepared for both Thursday and Friday. That’s TWO NIGHTS of house shows this week!

On Thursday evening, beginning at 7:30 and running until 11 p.m. we’ve got:

Peter Katz: “2012 JUNO Nominee, Emerging Artist of the Year nominee at the Canadian Folk Music Awards and Winner of the CBC Galaxie Rising Star Award, recording artist Peter Katz captivates listeners with his unique brand of contemporary folk music.”

Ben Cosgrove: “Ben Cosgrove is a composer, pianist, and multi-instrumentalist based in Boston, MA. He performs regularly both as a solo artist and as a sideman and has written scores for films, plays, radio, and television, toured widely across the US and Canada, and produced several well-received albums of his original, often geographically-inspired work.”

Jungle Jym and the Monkey Bards: “Made up of musical mutts, Humber jazz students and members of the wild suns, Jungle Jym & the Monkey Bards were formerly on a train bound for glory. Unfortunately they went off the rails somewhere between Nashville and New Orleans.”

On Friday evening, also beginning at 7:30 and finishing up around 11 p.m., we’ve got a special treat for you. Presenting the Improvised Edition - a show full of Guelph music students, block-rocking beats and lots of improvisation. Check out the roster:

Manatee: A nine-piece afro-beat/free improvising ensemble. Lots of horns, lots of cool rhythms, lots of improvising.

Episteme Ensemble: This ensemble is full of Guelph music students who rock out to funk/jazz/r&b fusion jams. And again, tons of improvising.

Callan Furlong: Callan plays honky-tonk, spanish-tinge, folk, old-time, ragtime, alternative country, and good old fashioned rock’n’roll. All in one set… that’s impressive.

It’s pouring rain today, and while I listen to the steady rhythm on my window, I’m getting more and more excited for the musical rhythms CMC has in store for everybody this evening. This will be the second show of the fall, and it’s set to be a fantastic one. We have a few returning musicians and a few new ones, including some spoken word - a rare but exciting occurrence for us. Here’s who we’ve got lined up:

Jos. Fortin - The warmth and melodies of this music will prepare us all for the chill of fall. Jos. Fortin will fill the room with his poetic lyrics and sweet sound and, for a moment, we will all forget about the cold and dark nights that are to come. Take a listen right here.

Zachary Lucky and Carly Maicher - Zachary and Carley graced us with their presence at a show last fall. Zachary and Carly have crossed the country countless times and shared their music with communities across Canada. Their soft folk jams saved us from a noise complaint ticket last year, and we’re thrilled to host them again. Take a listen to Zachary here and Carly here.

Eitan “Tunny” Gallant - a long-time resident of Guelph and an active member of our social fabric, Tunny’s spoken word performances are legendary for their flow and their profundity. They’ll fill you with love and fire at the same time. Watch out once Tunny takes the mic…

Our Collective will be busy this afternoon making soup for your enjoyment! So bring a bowl and a spoon and you can partake in the consumption of said soup.

Well, it is that time of year again. Time to catch-up with old friends, dust off those notebooks (if you still use them), and try to catch a bus before it gets too full. For us as CMC it means starting a new season of house shows. We are hoping to have them every two weeks this semester, so make sure you keep an eye on our page. We have a really exciting line-up to start the season off. In no particular order, here is what will be in store for you:

Rob Moir - Rob is visiting us from Toronto where he was formerly the frontman of the indie-punk band Dead Letter Department. Now a solo artist, Rob has traveled North America and Europe, gracing listeners with his honest lyrics. He even played a house show in Germany! The Good for Naughts - Contrary to their name, this four pice indie[rock band from the Guelph/Kitchener area are good for a lot of things, including their music. Community Music is teaming up with Release to present our most ambitious music show to date, a one-day festival event in Royal City Park, along the Speed River in Guelph!! We’re extremely excited to announce this event and we hope that all of you can make it out for some fantastic music, some good food, and some great times. Let’s all celebrate summer one last time and kick off the fall in style.

Summer House Show: Tomorrow, July 17th!!

Summer is a time for many things: patios, decks, sun, shade, cherries, hummus, tanlines, allergies, renouncing vegetarianism, fruitflies…and music. Summer is the mating season for music scenes around the world, with artists touring nonstop, festivals emerging in every town, and music-lovers finding a renewed passion for outdoor dancing.

Tomorrow, the CM collective will break free from its 2.5 month post-semester hump and join the throngs of wonderful musical events happening all over this fine city of Guelph. We will be hosting a show at 9 Waterloo Avenue at 7:00 pm with musical guests Morgan MacDonald, Ben Doerksen, and Anna Horvath (aka Merival).

Morgan MacDonald is a Halifax singer-songwriter who seems to pour his heart into his roots/folk songs, offering us a deeply intimate glimpse into his life and his history. Blending east coast melodies with bluesy lyrics, Morgan’s live show has been praised from coast to coast. CM is extremely excited to host Morgan on his Guelph tour stop. Check out his tunes here.

Ben Doerksen is a CM favourite and a Guelph local musical celebrity, both with Your Neck of The Woods and as a solo musician. His gritty voice and heartfelt songs will have you laughing, crying, dancing, and thinking all at the same time. Check out Ben’s tunes here.

Anna Horvath (aka Merival) is another fantastic artist who is back to CM by popular request. Her songs are catchy and folksy, showing off her lyrical and vocal prowess and her multi-instrumental skills. Mandolin, banjo, guitar…Merival has seemingly mastered them all and is not afraid to bust them out at a house show. Check out Merival’s tunes here. She also has a fantastic Southern Souls set here.

Sorry for the late notice on this one, but believe me, it’s gonna be one that you absolutely cannot miss! This is our last show of the semester, and we have an incredible line-up for you. It may be exam period, but that’s no excuse. We have four bands (4!!) rocking the house. Show starts at 8 pm at 24 Yorkshire.

Oh, how quickly this semester has passed. Just a blurry scene outside the window of our accelerating lives. As everybody frantically prepare for the April’s chaos and the vague hints of warm sunlight that lay beyond, Community Music has some upcoming shows that’ll help you hit the brakes, at least for an evening, and spend some time with friends, music, and of course, soup. So grab your Wellys and some duct tape, ‘cause this show’s gonna be off the hook.

We’ve had some last-minute changes, but our line-up for tomorrow night (March 29th) has been confirmed, and we’re excited as ever. The show will happen at 18 Wolfond Crescent, starting at 8:00 pm.

Adrian Underhill Hailing from Montreal, indie rocker falling in love with african and brazilian rhythms after loving pop music forever.

I walked outside to warn our neighbours of the noise, albeit pleasant, that would soon reverberate from our wood-panelled living room. Passing two curious strangers, drawn to our address from a tweet from the band, I invited them to join. I felt like Mr. Tumnus, holding the keys to some kind of winter-less Narnia. As I re-entered, I heard a deep baritone voice, rich and textured like honey or stained glass in the sunset. Was there no microphone making such a rich, swelling hum? No auto-tune manufacturing such dulcet harmonies? Not to mention the ticket surcharge or VIP passes that must certainly be necessary to be here?

I attempt to bring you into the intimate moment that we shared with The Wooden Sky. A night of echoing fairy dust; shuddering within our hyperbaric chamber of joy-sodden friends.

Their newest songs were played with soulful gusto, the band tapping stylish leather boots against the stained-pine floor. The old songs were played like savoury cupcakes, the cross-legged audience providing the icing of backup vocals: “Oh my God, it still means a lot to me…” And then came the wonderful question, posed to the residents, “can we play some acoustic songs on the front lawn?” Emphatic yes.

The night air warmly whistled along. Ambulant passers-by took triple takes. The strongest stars shone through the barricade of light and atmospheric pollution, giving the sense that we were in fact being transported to some mystical land of Narniaric proportions. They were our wardrobe; our magic rings; our “Lumos!”

They are on tour now, and goodness knows we wish we could staple ourselves to their van. Because then it was over. And oh my God, it still means a lot to me.

One of our most popular acts of the past year was The Prenup in mid-November. Their smooth backing grooves, soulful choruses, and incredibly talented MC captured the hearts of the soup-slurping crowd. We’ve since had several requests for recordings from the group, and I’m happy to say that 3-Card, the group’s MC, has just released a FREE download on his site, featuring other members of The Prenup.
