Something to bring people together. We’re not so different.
Community music, because it sounds alright.

Kicking off at 8 p.m. at 7 Bagot Street (fondly referred to as the Onean House), for your listening pleasure, we present Harlan Pepper, Tear Away Tusa and Rose Brokenshire.

Harlan Pepper has been described as alt-country, hard rock, blues and folk all rolled into one. Hailing from Hamilton, the four young men have shared the stage with the Sadles, Born Ruffians, Elliot Brood, Lee Harvey Osmond, Huron, the Arlells and Feist. After they play our intimate house show they hit the road with shows lined up in Hamilton, London, Guelph and Peterborough.

Check out their website at harlanpepper.com where you can sample a good assortment of their music - both live at past shows or from their new CD, Young and Old.

Tear Away Tusa is no stranger to the Guelph music scene. A frequent performer at the Red Brick Cafe, the five-piece group has had a busy past year, playing shows in Toronto, Niagara Falls, Waterloo and all around Guelph. Last June, the band released a slick music video that gives you a little taste of their sound. Check it out:

Rose Brokenshire is a last minute add to the bill, but we’re so glad she can play! Check out her Bandcamp page to sample tracks from her three different albums.

Here’s an excerpt describing Rose from her Facebook page:

“Rose Brokenshire is an ethereal lofi singer songwriter project all the way from Toronto. The songs are simple, unashamedly executed with all too natural starts and stops like the imperfections of breathing. The songs rest very self assured on the loveliness of this woman’s gentle voice.”

Come on out at 8 p.m. for some sweet, sweet tunes. And don’t forget to bring some dolla’s for the pay what you can jar.

See ya there!

Ben Cosgrove performs live at Community Music

A video of Ben Cosgrove performing live on March 21, 2013 in Guelph.

We have an amazing musical lineup prepared for both Thursday and Friday. That’s TWO NIGHTS of house shows this week!

On Thursday evening, beginning at 7:30 and running until 11 p.m. we’ve got:

Peter Katz: “2012 JUNO Nominee, Emerging Artist of the Year nominee at the Canadian Folk Music Awards and Winner of the CBC Galaxie Rising Star Award, recording artist Peter Katz captivates listeners with his unique brand of contemporary folk music.”
Listen to Peter here.

Ben Cosgrove: “Ben Cosgrove is a composer, pianist, and multi-instrumentalist based in Boston, MA. He performs regularly both as a solo artist and as a sideman and has written scores for films, plays, radio, and television, toured widely across the US and Canada, and produced several well-received albums of his original, often geographically-inspired work.”
Hear more of Ben here.

Jungle Jym and the Monkey Bards: “Made up of musical mutts, Humber jazz students and members of the wild suns, Jungle Jym & the Monkey Bards were formerly on a train bound for glory. Unfortunately they went off the rails somewhere between Nashville and New Orleans.”
Jym’s music here.

Also, Guelph’s Kat MacGregor is going to be doing some live painting at the show! Check out her stuff here.

Thursday’s show will be held at 111 Waterloo Avenue. See the Facebook event page here.

On Friday evening, also beginning at 7:30 and finishing up around 11 p.m., we’ve got a special treat for you. Presenting the Improvised Edition - a show full of Guelph music students, block-rocking beats and lots of improvisation. Check out the roster:

Manatee: A nine-piece afro-beat/free improvising ensemble. Lots of horns, lots of cool rhythms, lots of improvising.

Episteme Ensemble: This ensemble is full of Guelph music students who rock out to funk/jazz/r&b fusion jams. And again, tons of improvising.

Callan Furlong: Callan plays honky-tonk, spanish-tinge, folk, old-time, ragtime, alternative country, and good old fashioned rock’n’roll. All in one set… that’s impressive.

Friday’s show will take place at 161 Neeve Street, a short walk from downtown. Check out the Facebook event page here.

Come out on Thursday. Come out on Friday. Better yet, come out to both! As always, delicious warm soup will be available, so come a bit early and warm up!

And also, these shows are a pay-what-you-can deal. All the money goes to the bands, helping them out with their travel costs, allowing them to come play music for you! Bring your change (cash is good too!) and help these artists out.

See you there!

CMC

House Show Tonight!! 7:30 pm, 7 Bagot Street

It’s pouring rain today, and while I listen to the steady rhythm on my window, I’m getting more and more excited for the musical rhythms CMC has in store for everybody this evening. This will be the second show of the fall, and it’s set to be a fantastic one. We have a few returning musicians and a few new ones, including some spoken word - a rare but exciting occurrence for us. Here’s who we’ve got lined up:

Jos. Fortin - The warmth and melodies of this music will prepare us all for the chill of fall. Jos. Fortin will fill the room with his poetic lyrics and sweet sound and, for a moment, we will all forget about the cold and dark nights that are to come. Take a listen right here.

Zachary Lucky and Carly Maicher - Zachary and Carley graced us with their presence at a show last fall. Zachary and Carly have crossed the country countless times and shared their music with communities across Canada. Their soft folk jams saved us from a noise complaint ticket last year, and we’re thrilled to host them again. Take a listen to Zachary here and Carly here.

Eitan “Tunny” Gallant - a long-time resident of Guelph and an active member of our social fabric, Tunny’s spoken word performances are legendary for their flow and their profundity. They’ll fill you with love and fire at the same time. Watch out once Tunny takes the mic…

Our Collective will be busy this afternoon making soup for your enjoyment! So bring a bowl and a spoon and you can partake in the consumption of said soup.

Remember that this is a pay-what-you-can event with all money collected going to the artists. Bring some coins/cash! And see y’all tonight!

House Show Tonight!! 7:30 pm, 9 Waterloo Avenue

Well, it is that time of year again. Time to catch-up with old friends, dust off those notebooks (if you still use them), and try to catch a bus before it gets too full. For us as CMC it means starting a new season of house shows. We are hoping to have them every two weeks this semester, so make sure you keep an eye on our page. We have a really exciting line-up to start the season off. In no particular order, here is what will be in store for you:

The Blackwood Two - This folk duo will treat your ears with a masterful collection of banjo, fiddle, and guitar and combine it with sweet vocal harmonies. You can check out their music here - http://www.myspace.com/theblackwoodtwo

Rob Moir - Rob is visiting us from Toronto where he was formerly the frontman of the indie-punk band Dead Letter Department. Now a solo artist, Rob has traveled North America and Europe, gracing listeners with his honest lyrics. He even played a house show in Germany! If you want to check out his music you can do so here: http://www.robmoir.com/ and here: http://robmoir.bandcamp.com/

The Good for Naughts - Contrary to their name, this four pice indie[rock band from the Guelph/Kitchener area are good for a lot of things, including their music. The Good for Naughts have played all over Guelph and we are excited to have them join us. You can take a listen to their music here: http://thegoodfornaughts.bandcamp.com/

Remember, this is a pay-what-you-can event with all the money going straight to the artists. So brings some coin or cash and a bunch of your friends and come out to kick-off the season of community music!

Community Music is teaming up with Release to present our most ambitious music show to date, a one-day festival event in Royal City Park, along the Speed River in Guelph!! We’re extremely excited to announce this event and we hope that all of you can make it out for some fantastic music, some good food, and some great times. Let’s all celebrate summer one last time and kick off the fall in style.

The even will take place this Saturday, August 25th from 2 - 10 pm in Guelph’s Royal City Park. Check out the facebook event and invite your friends!!

The fantastic Community Music line-up will play from 2 - 6 pm and features:

First Rate People - a large music collective with a sound as ambitious as their list of members. Their quirky brand of indie pop will have your feet moving and your heart swooning. Check them out: http://www.firstratepeople.com/

Illitry - a talented duo who create guitar/synth soundscapes backdropped by a strong beat and accented with poignant vocals. These Hamilton up-and-comers are Community Music favourites and are back by popular request. Check them out: http://music.illitry.com/

Matthew de Zoete - Toronto folk rock musician with an appetite for hushed, smoky melodies and heart-on-sleeve lyricism. Get ready to stay, sway, and get blown away. Listen to or purchase his album right here: http://matthewdezoete.bandcamp.com/

Bethany Klapwyk - Bethany is a Guelph local and a talented CM favourite. Her stripped-down songs will invoke nostalgia for campfire guitar sessions. Check out her quirky and lovely album right here: http://bethanyklapwyk.bandcamp.com/

Matthew Reeves - a local force of talent, Reeves recently stepped in at a CM show as a last minute addition, promptly blowing away the entire audience with his heartfelt songwriting and powerfully soulful voice. Check out his music here: http://www.myspace.com/mischiefthief

In addition to all those incredible musicians, Release will present four local DJs spinning tunes from 6 - 10 pm:

DJ Feelgood - An NV regular and a talented local DJ, Feelgood has spun all over Southern Ontario and is known for his low-key, chilled-out house tracks. Check it: http://soundcloud.com/deejayfeelgood

The Shi King - Kaelin Britton is a veteran in the Toronto/Guelph house DJ scene, making him one of the most well-known DJs in the area. Check him out here: http://theshiking.wordpress.com/

Tim Penner - Tim has been working in the music industry for more than a decade, and pounds out a perfect house/trance set with ease. He’s a Southern Ontario favourite and is bound to impress even the pickiest audience. Check him out here: http://www.timpennermusic.com/

Finally, we’d like to thank the sponsors of this event for supporting us and making this all possible:

The Joint Cafe - http://www.thejointcafe.com/

Wellington Brewery - http://www.wellingtonbrewery.ca/

Summer is a time for many things: patios, decks, sun, shade, cherries, hummus, tanlines, allergies, renouncing vegetarianism, fruitflies…and music. Summer is the mating season for music scenes around the world, with artists touring nonstop, festivals emerging in every town, and music-lovers finding a renewed passion for outdoor dancing.

Tomorrow, the CM collective will break free from its 2.5 month post-semester hump and join the throngs of wonderful musical events happening all over this fine city of Guelph. We will be hosting a show at 9 Waterloo Avenue at 7:00 pm with musical guests Morgan MacDonald, Ben Doerksen, and Anna Horvath (aka Merival).

Morgan MacDonald is a Halifax singer-songwriter who seems to pour his heart into his roots/folk songs, offering us a deeply intimate glimpse into his life and his history. Blending east coast melodies with bluesy lyrics, Morgan’s live show has been praised from coast to coast. CM is extremely excited to host Morgan on his Guelph tour stop. Check out his tunes here.

Ben Doerksen is a CM favourite and a Guelph local musical celebrity, both with Your Neck of The Woods and as a solo musician. His gritty voice and heartfelt songs will have you laughing, crying, dancing, and thinking all at the same time. Check out Ben’s tunes here.

Anna Horvath (aka Merival) is another fantastic artist who is back to CM by popular request. Her songs are catchy and folksy, showing off her lyrical and vocal prowess and her multi-instrumental skills. Mandolin, banjo, guitar…Merival has seemingly mastered them all and is not afraid to bust them out at a house show. Check out Merival’s tunes here. She also has a fantastic Southern Souls set here.

The show is bound to be a fantastic one, so bring a friend and some charcuteries, and we’ll see y’all at 9 Waterloo Ave tomorrow.

House Show Tonight!!!

Sorry for the late notice on this one, but believe me, it’s gonna be one that you absolutely cannot miss! This is our last show of the semester, and we have an incredible line-up for you. It may be exam period, but that’s no excuse. We have four bands (4!!) rocking the house. Show starts at 8 pm at 24 Yorkshire.

Harlan Pepper are a young Hamilton band that plays jangly rock music. They are absolutely fantastic live, and the lead singer looks like Bob Dylan. Awesome. http://www.harlanpepper.com/

Jenny Omnichord is a long-standing member of the Guelph music scene. Her style is almost as unique as her instrument choice, and we’re super lucky to have her. http://www.myspace.com/jennyomnichord

The Stumbellas are a 6-member Toronto-based band that play fantastic alt country/rock music. They’ll be filling the house with wonderful jams thick with banjo and harmonies. http://www.thestrumbellas.ca/index

Finally, Bethany Klapwyk and Seb Ramirez are a couple of local musicians that write soul-wrenchingly beautiful songs that always seem to remind me of home. http://bethanyklapwyk.bandcamp.com/

So take a break from exams and come on out! This show will be sure to rock your socks.

Tomorrow!!!

Well, the rumours and the rumblings, they’re all now coming true

And Community Music, once again is coming through

It’s April, yadda yadda, and you know just what we’ll do?

drop those papers, head to Kent Street to hear some local tuuuunes!!

First up? we got a treat for ya, hittin’ up the stage

A new and local indie band, they’ll soon be all the rage

You can’t even try to put this music in a cage

It’s Big Bear, and they’ll break the bars, despite their youthful age.

Next up? we got a treat for ya, a young and spry musician

He hitchiked here from Boston town, you best give him a listen

Ben Cosgrove plays piano niiiice, with notes that shine and glisten

Like Beethoven when he still could hear, his feet you’ll soon be kissin’.

Finally, a local gal, her stage name is Merival

Picked up guitar a few years back and never looked behind her

Follow the beauty voice, my friends, and you’ll be sure to find her

And if you ever speak to her, you’ll know no one is kinder.

So grab a friend, and grab your pants, and come on out tomorrow

If you won’t, or if you don’t, your heart will fill with sorrow

And if your pants don’t fit no more, I’ve got a pair to borrow

8 pm at 31 Kent, you cannot be a no-show!

Check it:

Ben Cosgrove – www.bencosgrove.com

Merival – www.merival.bandcamp.com

***ALSO: our friend Remy will be creating live art during the show. It’s gonna be on the wall!

Upcoming Show: March 29th!!

Oh, how quickly this semester has passed. Just a blurry scene outside the window of our accelerating lives. As everybody frantically prepare for the April’s chaos and the vague hints of warm sunlight that lay beyond, Community Music has some upcoming shows that’ll help you hit the brakes, at least for an evening, and spend some time with friends, music, and of course, soup. So grab your Wellys and some duct tape, ‘cause this show’s gonna be off the hook.

We’ve had some last-minute changes, but our line-up for tomorrow night (March 29th) has been confirmed, and we’re excited as ever. The show will happen at 18 Wolfond Crescent, starting at 8:00 pm.

Adrian Underhill Hailing from Montreal, indie rocker falling in love with african and brazilian rhythms after loving pop music forever.

He’s posted a few stellar tracks on his facebook page here: http://www.facebook.com/adrianunderhillmusic/app_178091127385

Once again, we’ll be graced by a sampling of Waterloo’s thriving folk scene. A Yellow Field plays bluegrass, and they do it bloody well. Complete with violins, banjos, and an upright bass (aww yea). Check out their music here: http://ayellowfield.com

Finally, we’d like to thank Conor Gains for agreeing to play this show without much notice. He plays gravelly blues music like a fiend. And his guitar skills are mad good, yo. Check him out: http://conorgains.com.

It’s bound to be a wonderful show. See y’all there!

Passing two curious strangers, drawn to our address from a tweet from the band, I invited them to join. I felt like Mr. Tumnus, holding the keys to some kind of winter-less Narnia. As I re-entered, I heard a deep baritone voice, rich and textured like honey or stained glass in the sunset. Was there no microphone making such a rich, swelling hum? No auto-tune manufacturing such dulcet harmonies? Not to mention the ticket surcharge or VIP passes that must certainly be necessary to be here?

I attempt to bring you into the intimate moment that we shared with The Wooden Sky. A night of echoing fairy dust; shuddering within our hyperbaric chamber of joy-sodden friends.

Their newest songs were played with soulful gusto, the band tapping stylish leather boots against the stained-pine floor. The old songs were played like savoury cupcakes, the cross-legged audience providing the icing of backup vocals: “Oh my God, it still means a lot to me…” And then came the wonderful question, posed to the residents, “can we play some acoustic songs on the front lawn?” Emphatic yes.

The night air warmly whistled along. Ambulant passers-by took triple takes. The strongest stars shone through the barricade of light and atmospheric pollution, giving the sense that we were in fact being transported to some mystical land of Narniaric proportions. They were our wardrobe; our magic rings; our “Lumos!”

They are on tour now, and goodness knows we wish we could staple ourselves to their van. Because then it was over. And oh my God, it still means a lot to me.

3-Card Economy Class EP

One of our most popular acts of the past year was The Prenup in mid-November. Their smooth backing grooves, soulful choruses, and incredibly talented MC captured the hearts of the soup-slurping crowd. We’ve since had several requests for recordings from the group, and I’m happy to say that 3-Card, the group’s MC, has just released a FREE download on his site, featuring other members of The Prenup. Grab it here: http://www.ec.harmlessdanger.com/. I’m sitting in the Toronto Island Airport giving it a first listen, and it doesn’t disappoint. Pure gold. Hot fire. Whatever…it’s just plain good music.

Pictures!

Hey all,
